No Impact Man DVD Review

on July 1, 2012

I watched No Impact Man last night and I plan to read the book as well, but I wanted to share my thoughts on just the DVD. I applaud the general idea of the movie to lessen our impact on our planet. However, I do not think zero or “no” impact is something folks should feel they have to strive for…because honestly it isn’t possible. We can do as much as we can to reduce our impact in feasible ways, and that’s what really matters. As the movie went on, he even stated, “It’s not about using as little as we can possibly use, but about finding a way to get what I need in a sustainable way.” That I like. We need to look for more sustainable ways to get what we need, and we really need to evaluate what we consider our needs to be. A lot of times what we thought we needed, we didn’t really after all.

I love the idea of consuming less and buying used whenever possible. I believe small steps make a big difference without overwhelming us. Switch to reusable bags, stop buying bottled water, get a set of bamboo or stainless steel utensils to replace plastic ones when eating out, use energy-efficient light bulbs, lower your air and heat, wash with cold water, use cloth towels and napkins, walk or bike places when you can, give away things you don’t need rather than trashing them, try to reuse or reduce using things in plastic packages and then recycle what you do use. Things like this lessen your impact. You can even do things like pick up trash when you are out places, and plant flowers and trees to help as well.

Some of the things they did in the movie were to an extreme, and they didn’t find well working ways to do them. But I think with anything like this you should take what you can from it and let it be a motivator to make positive changes in your own life! (: Please be aware that this movie does contain some profanity sadly, and I feel it completely detracts from the movie’s message. Honestly it’s just ugly to hear when someone has such a good message to get across – especially from the mom! So if you are going to watch it, do it without the kiddos or be prepared for them to hear some unesseccary garbage. Or you can read the book and see if it has the same language:

If you’ve seen the movie or read the book, what did you think? What do you think of the general ideas?
