It’s The Small Things

There are so many things a parent can do when homeschooling their child. It’s basically a limitless world of possibilities. But the most important thing we can do – make it special. Find a way to make it special in your own way that works for your family. For each family this may be different, and that’s okay. One of the biggest mistake a homeschooling parent can make it to believe they have to do things just like other families to succeed. We don’t need to be like other families, we just need to do what will work the best for our own families. πŸ™‚

So for us, one small thing we do is certificates. We make a big thing out of it, getting a frame and putting them up on the wall. Some of our books have had certificates in the back of them which was great. The rest we made on the computer. It is a joy for my daughter to complete a book and know she gets to decorate her certificate, pick out a frame and see it hung on the wall. It’s such a feeling of accomplishment for her, and the ones on the wall are reminders that she can succeed.

It’s something small, but in our home it makes a big difference. πŸ™‚

A quote that really struck me this week and had me thinking, yet again, how what we watch impacts us a lot more than we realize: “The biggest public mistake I ever made was that I chose to do Criminal Minds in the first place. I thought it was something very different. I never thought they were going to kill and rape all these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year. It was very destructive to my soul and my personality. After that, I didn’t think I would get to work in television again. I’m not making a judgment on the taste [of people who watch crime procedurals]. But I’m concerned about the effect it has. Audiences all over the world use this programming as their bedtime story. This isn’t what you need to be dreaming about.” β€”actor Mandy Patinkin, who starred on the CBS crime procedural Criminal Minds for two seasons before abruptly quitting in 2007. [, 9/9/12 c&e]

Hectic, Busy, More Hectic, Then More Busy

I have not been so diligent about updating lately, I’m sorry y’all. My home childcare business got super busy and the days I had off I just really needed rest and free time. On top of that we had classes, birthdays, and school pick ups, selling stuff, and church groups, and homeschooling, and the list goes on. It just got to be too much for a while.Β  So now we are getting back into a less busy routine for us. We are finishing up the 1st grade year with homeschooling and excited to start 2nd grade! πŸ™‚

One thing I have learned a lot in the last couple months is balance is key. When you do to much you lose the healthy balance you and your children need. It affects sleep, energy, moods, productiveness, etc. I tried to take on too much and we ended up losing sight of things that used to be important to us. We are working to getting back on track now. We don’t always realize how things like that can get us off track and start to make our lives more hectic. We often don’t see how it affects our kiddos either. Balance is extremely important. Too much of anything can be bad. I’ve had to take a look at things and decide where our priorities should lie and how to work things around them, giving plenty of time to rest and time free of doing things. When we do too much we get overwhelmed and worn out. Our bodies need time to recharge and decompress from everything.

So now that I’m working to restore a healthy balance for us, I’ll be updating again. I love to blog and share things, it’s something I find joy in and want to make time for. πŸ™‚ I hope you all have a wonderful, balanced week! πŸ˜‰
